I used to think scrolling was a way to unwind.
After a long day, I’d pick up my phone just to check in, just to relax for a minute. But somehow, one minute turned into ten, then thirty. I’d look up, feeling wired and restless instead of rested.
That’s when I started paying attention to what was actually happening in my brain.

The hidden cost of endless scrolling
Social media isn’t neutral. It’s designed to keep you hooked. Every swipe, every notification, every hit of new information triggers dopamine, the brain’s reward chemical.
The problem? The dopamine spikes fast but crashes hard. So you keep scrolling, hoping for another hit, another moment of novelty. Meanwhile, your attention span shortens, anxiety creeps in, and deep focus becomes harder and harder.
Research shows that chronic social media use increases stress, lowers self-control, and disrupts sleep cycles. But we keep coming back because our brains are wired for anticipation. We’re not addicted to the content itself—we’re addicted to the next thing that might be rewarding.
How to take back control
Breaking free doesn’t mean quitting social media completely. It means using it with intention.
Turn your screen black and white. Studies show that removing color reduces compulsive scrolling. Try it—it makes social apps way less interesting.
Create before you consume. If you’re someone who posts or engages online, make sure your own ideas come first. Open a notebook before opening an app.
No passive scrolling. If you’re not engaging, learning, or being inspired, put the phone down. Your time is too valuable to spend on autopilot.
Social media isn’t the enemy, but mindless consumption is. We don’t need to be more disciplined—we just need to be more aware of how our brains are being trained.
This is the kind of work Nina and I are passionate about—helping people break the patterns keeping them stuck and create habits that actually serve them. If you’re ready to rewire your mindset, let’s talk.
