We know just how intimidating running your own business can be - there are about a million and one things to consider, like branding, marketing, packaging, innovating…the list goes on and on! A lot of these factors intersect in one specific place, and that’s on your website.
A good website is the cornerstone of any successful business.
It’s your online catalogue, your sales pitch, and your personal introduction to new customers. First impressions are important, but we don’t always get them right - here are three common mistakes you could be making on your own website.
1. Hidden Navigations and Information Overloads
Your website is the first place a prospective customer will go to learn more about your business. If they can’t navigate through your site, or struggle to find relevant information quickly and easily, then you’ve lost a potential client.
The most effective websites are ones that are clear, concise, informative, and easy to navigate - ditch the disappearing menu bars and thesis-length homepage introductions!
Make a bulleted list of your most important business information, or answers to the questions asked most frequently by your customers. This is a good place to start when figuring out what people want to see on your website.
Another favourite tip of ours is to create a sleek, single-page website design - this way, all of your information is in one easy-to-navigate place, and all a potential customer has to do it scroll down through it to find what they need. Easy peasy!
2. Missing Contact Details
The first step any customer takes when they want to learn more about your business is to look for your contact details - an email address, phone number, or even social media handles. If this crucial information is missing from your website…then what?
A simple fix is to have a dedicated contact form on your website that links directly with your email address, or you can simply list your preferred contact details in the footer section. The easier these details are to find, the better!
3. Not Optimising For Mobile
Life as we know it is fast-paced and always on the move, so the ability to work on the go has become essential. People spend far more time on their phones, whether it be communicating, researching, or just browsing.
If your website hasn’t been optimised for mobile use, you could be missing out on a huge chunk of potential business.
But what does ‘mobile optimisation’ actually mean?
Essentially, it means making sure that your website runs as smoothly on a cellphone browser as it does on a laptop or desktop. A seamless user interface, easily-accessible menus, mobile-friendly text and contact forms…you get the picture.
And while this may sound overly technical and just a little intimidating, website platforms like Wix offer an option to tweak your mobile site while working on your desktop one - all click and drag and no coding experience necessary!
A good website is the best investment you can make for your business. It might seem intimidating to start off with, but once you’ve worked out all the kinks and used our tips to get you on the right track, it’s smooth sailing.
